Camera Theater Jazz is a drop-in class Sarah developed with the goal of offering an accessible on-camera class from a theater dance perspective. It is an opportunity for students to gain confidence dancing for the camera. Sarah utilizes her professional experience working in television (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Physical, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Étoile) and other on-camera projects such as web series' and music videos, combined with her skills as a teacher and videographer, to create a safe space where theater jazz dancers can prepare themselves for professional on-camera work. The class became an overnight success, consistently selling out drop-in classes at Broadway Dance Center and independently. Sarah has since been brought on by several programs and institutions to teach CTJ guest classes including Emerson College, Cut Dancers of NY, and BDC's Professional Semester, AIM Company, and Junior Training Program. Sarah also curated Camera Theater Jazz: The Intensive, a full day of mock professional on-camera exercises including The On Set Experience, improvisation, filming both in groups and solo, Q&As, and more.

Each class begins with a short jazz-based warm up and culminates in learning a Theater Jazz combination that is then filmed individually. Students receive constructive, on-the-spot feedback that can be applied in the classroom, on set, and beyond.

CAMERA THEATER JAZZ: THE INTENSIVE

Intensive

Camera Theater Jazz: The Intensive was a full day of mock professional on-camera exercises. Dancers practiced their acting chops in the On Set Experience, a scripted short film with dialogue, staging, and choreography. Dancers also had the opportunity to film multiple solo combinations, one of which was pre-learned one of which was learned and performed on the spot, and one of which was a freestyle combination of the dancers' choosing. The day finished with a Q&A about industry topics such as working on both live and scripted television, casting submissions, dance reels, social media, websites, and more!

TESTIMONIALS FROM STUDENTS

"I learned so much! I really appreciate the choices you made, from incoporating language you would hear on set, to facing us away from the mirror, to filming after only doing small groups 1 time through. It really made me trust myself and I'm finding for me, building that trust has been the most important component. [The class] was so well thought out and beautifully executed. Thank you!"
